CENTRE SETS UP TEAMS TO CHOKE NAXAL FUNDING :-

After reducing the size of Red corridor space, the Centre has now formed Multi-Disciplinary Groups to check funding of Naxalites, which is unofficially estimated to be over ₹125 crore annually.

Steps taken by MHA to choke Naxal Funding & ensure confiscation of properties of the banned outfit leaders.:-

1) About Multi-Disciplinary Groups :-
  • The group comprises officers from various central agencies like IB, NIA, CBI, ED and DRI and the state police departments.
  • It is headed by an Additional secretary and has representatives from the IB, ED, DRI, NIA and the CBDT (Central Board of Direct Taxes) and the CBI, as also state intelligence departments and CID.

2) A process has also been initiated to create a separate vertical in the NIA for investigating important cases relating to Left Wing Extremism (LWE).

The ministry claims that coordinated effort by the central agencies and state police has started to show results, and investigators have tracked down payments made by Maoist leaders.





INDIA GETS $200 MILLION LOAN FOR NUTRITION MISSION :-

India on Monday signed an agreement with the World Bank for a $200 million loan for implementing the National Nutrition Mission across 315 districts of the country.

National Nutrition Mission :-
  • Approved by the Union Cabinet last year, the mission aims at reaching 10 crore beneficiaries, mainly children upto the age of six years, pregnant women and lactating mothers and adolescent girls.
  • The programme will be implemented in three phases between 2017 and 2020 across all districts of the country.

Targeted reductions
  • The mission targets a 2% reduction in both under-nutrition and low birth weight per annum.
  • It also aims to bring down anaemia among young children, women and adolescent girls by 3% per year until 2020.
  • The government will also strive to reduce the prevalence of stunting from the current level of 38.4% (as per the National Family Health Survey 4) to 25% by 2022.

Budget 
  • The National Nutrition Mission has an approved budget of Rs. 9,046.17 crore.
  • The total contribution of the Centre will be Rs. 2,849.54 crore and nearly Rs. 1,700 crore will be contributed by the States.
  • The remaining will be funded through the government’s tie-up with multilateral agencies such as the World Bank.

All-round upgradation
  • The project will include investments in improving the skills and capacities of ICDS staff and community workers.



EU CARBON EMISSIONS ROSE IN 2017 : EUROSTAT

  •  European Union (EU) carbon emissions from burning fossil fuels increased in 2017, according to statistics office Eurostat.
  • Carbon emissions in the EU were up 1.8 percent from 2016, Eurostat said, with a double-digit increase in Malta and Estonia.
  • While Finland and Denmark showed the sharpest declines, emissions in Germany -the bloc's largest economy and still dependent on coal for 40 percent of its electricity, showed little change.
  • The EU has been vocal about trying to save the Paris Agreement on climate change after the United States said it would withdraw from the deal.
  • The Paris agreement seeks to limit rise in the planet's average temperature to well below 2 degrees Celsius.
  • The EU aims to reduce its carbon emissions by 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2030, with a 60 percent drop by 2040.
